Most of them know this is our national anthem. but how many of us really know the meaning of this. i wouldn't be surprised if many think it is hindi without knowing it actually is bengali.
We have been singing this song since we were kid and its so sad that many of us don't know what it means. honestly i didn't know what it meant. i even didn't bother to find it out until recently. we pay respect to this by standing up and saluting most of the time, but without knowing what we are singing.
It was bengali because tagore wrote it in bengali.but why would they still keep it in bengali. if hindi is the national language, then our national anthem should be in hindi.
Either they should tell the kids in the school the meaning of our anthem so that they know what they are singing or else shouldn't ask them to sing. i wouldn't be suprised either if many of our politicians, defense personals, government officials don't know what it means. Public in general most of them wouldn't know, thats for sure.
It was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honor of King George V and the Queen of England when they visited India in 1911 and if you read the meaning they praise the king rather than Mother India.
Its so unfortunate that we have been singing and paying respect to a song for more than 60 years after independence, that we don't understand, not written in our national language, which praises british ruler and not India, Great!
One thing i'm happy is that most of us who can speak only english and regional language can be proud that they could sing in another language bengali.

yeah I heard about this a while ago! Its sick we are having a national anthem like this one...
dont be surprised if you happen to listen to a remix on this which praises india rather than british rulers..
so far, from the people i have talked to, no one knew the meaning before... the latest jana mana gana by AR Rahman is available in youtube. check it out.
With respect I must state you are wrong.
1)Tagore was too great and noble a person to compose a song for some British Monarch
2)Remember Tagore even returned the Knighthood to protest gainst the J'gh tragedy
3)Look at the Anthem as a Prayer to God, and you will enjoy it
4) Also consider the words of Tagore' poem " Where the mind is without fear......... (in which last line is) Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, Let my country awake...
This should remind and shame intellectual midgets like us that Rabindranath Tagore should not belittled on the basis of our ignorance.

Quite by accident I came across this blog..and am quite shocked to find...how ignorant people can be........!!
First of all..though Jana ganamana was originally written in bengali..what we sing today is purely "shuddh hindi":))..ofcourse if you do not know Hindi well enough, it is an entirely different story.......!! Why blame the Poet for tht!..
As for the song being written in praise of the English Monarch..is an absolute "trash".......The song was chosen to welcome the Monarch......but it is quite different from "being written for the Monarch"........
Before spreading wrong concepts...Please do use a bit of your own intellct!

we being Indians should try to adopt a new National anthem which can be written in any Indian language but must praise our MOTHER INDIA
incidentaly even vande mataram was written in 'bengali' . but here a point ought to be noted . in both the cases the stanzas that were chosen as national song and anthem contain highly sankritized bengali---something that can be satisfactorily interpreted both as sanskrit and suddha bengali .
so when we sing them it is factually sanskrit that we r uttering . there should not be any problems with that .
the later stanzes were intentionally avoided because it contained explicit bengali verses which cannot have any sanskrit interpretations .
secondly , hindi , though our national language , is a recent language created mainly under british rule , by prolonged intermingling of various dialects like maithili ,khari boli etc and the urge of british to create a unified north indian dialect .
a song in this language would be an imposition to millions who doesnt know or follow hindi .
whereas sanskrit is our mother language and hence remains free from such objections ...
